All-Natural: Organic Weed Killer

An organic weed killer is a convenient, economical and natural means to kill the weeds without any harmful side effects. It is absolutely chemical-free making it safe compared to the non-organic herbicides.

Types of Organic Weed Killer

Basically, there are four main categories of organic weed killer namely the acidic, salt, germination inhibitors and fatty acids.

Acidic weed killer is comprised of ingredients like lime, vinegar or lemon that are acidic in nature. The measurement of the acid’s concentration is roughly 15% to 20%. When it is sprayed on the weed, the acidic content destroys its protective layer causing the weed to die. Likewise, it also devastates the roots. As a concentrated acetic acid, vinegar becomes a popular organic weed killer. It decreases the pH of the soil. However, the pH balance comes back to its original state within 48 hours. Hence, when the weeds are soaked with vinegar, the weeds are killed in a period of just 2 days.

Salt, particularly the garden-variety rock salt is also an effective weed killer. It draws the water out of the weed’s cells leaving them dry. Consequently, salty soils kill the roots as well. Nonetheless, too much application of salt to the soil can cause it to be barren. A single teaspoon of regular salt can also wipe out the weeds. However, it has to be used carefully on a soil prepared for gardening.

Germination inhibitor like corn gluten meal is also a known organic weed killer. Its best feature is that it solely affects the unwanted weeds. It can be easily spread all over the lawn to prevent the new seedlings from growing without worrying about harming the established desired plants.

Weed killer with fatty acids work by dissolving the plant’s membranes causing the leaves to wither and then die. It results to the dehydration of the unnecessary weeds. With its acidic nature, it kills every plant that it is applied on. Thus, it has to be sprayed very warily. Given that condition, it works well on spot treatments.

Benefits of Organic Weed Killer

The utilization of organic weed killer is a simple and beneficial technique to produce healthier crops, flowers, plants and vegetables. Organic weed solutions do not emit chemicals that damage the environment. Thus, it is eco-friendly.

Economical-Be practical. Use what you have. You don’t need to waste much money on commercial herbicides. Instead, make use of your own household solutions. For instance, directly spray the vinegar on the weeds. It is a natural and safe alternative to chemical weed killers. Take care not to spray the other plants because it can damage them just as it does the weeds.

Safe-Chemical weed killers can be dangerous when ingested. Even if you rinse off your vegetables, the non-organic solutions can sink into the soil and affect all the plants in a bed or garden. On the other hand, organic weed killer comes from plant sources that make it harmless to human beings.

Convenient-Even if the mulch is in place, weeds may still come back.  Rather than using chemicals to get rid of them, have your garden gloves out and pull them off. Closely working with your plants will also alert you to other problems like pest infestations or root rot.
